Single Tax Filing Status

If a taxpayer is single or unmarried, he or she does not necessarily have to file his or her tax return as a single taxpayer. A single or unmarried taxpayer can qualify as a head of household and get many more tax benefits than a single taxpayer would. Below is a chart that shows how a single or unmarried taxpayer can qualify as a head of household.

If the taxpayer is single, then the following questions will help determine if he or she qualifies for the head of household filing status.

Paid over half of cost of keeping up the home all year? Did your spouse die this tax year? NO Single tax filing status

Married but not filing with spouse

 YES

Main home for qualifying person? Did your spouse die this tax year? NO Single tax filing status

Married but not filing with spouse

 YES
